The Hoover (AL) varsity football team won Friday’s 11/13 home playoff game against Oak Mountain (Birmingham, AL) by a score of 24-21.
This was a great game that we at EdjVarsity wanted to highlight with a custom post game report and analysis from some great coaching decisions as well as impact plays.
Hoover vs. Oak Mountain Best Decisions:
Hoover Buccaneers – Coach Niblett
With 8:10 remaining in the 3rd quarter and trailing 10-13 , Hoover faced a 4th & 2 from the Oak Mountain 2-yard line. Coach Niblett made the call to go for it, increasing Hoover’s pre-snap win probability by +7% over the next best option of kicking a FG. Hoover converted the play, resulting in a TD increasing their overall win probability by +14% as a result of the score and XP.
At the start of the 4th Quarter (12:00), Hoover faced a 4th & 5 from the Oak Mountain 21-yard Iine, trailing 17-21. Coach Niblett decided to go for it, increasing the Bucs pre-snap win probability by +8% over the call to attempt a FG. That 4th down play resulted in a 21-yd TD pass that proved to be the turning point of this game and resulting in a +29% in win-probability after the TD and XP.
Oak Mountain – Coach Bell
Oak Mountain HC Cris Bell made a number of excellent calls to go for it on 4th down in this game, including a 4th & 2 from the Hoover 41-yard line on their first drive of the game with 8:52 in the 1st quarter tied 0-0. Coach Bell made the call to go for it, increasing their win probability by +5% early in the game.
Later in the game Oak Mountain faced a 4th & 12 on the Hoover 28-yard line with 5:15 in the 3rd quarter, trailing 13-17. Coach Bell made a great call to go for it, which resulted in a DPI – resulting in a 1st down and increasing their win probability by +13%. Oak Mountain would go on to score on that drive and take the lead 21-17.
Trailing 21-24 and acing a critical 4th & 2 with 3:14 remaining in the 4th quarter and 2 timeouts remaining, Coach Bell made the correct decision to go for the 1st down and converted. That 4th down conversion increased Oak Mountain’s win probability by +14% in what would be their final drive of the game in which they came up just short against Hoover with a final score of Hoover 24, Oak Mountain 21.
